The Burchfield

The Burchfield

A few months ago, I was on our customary conference call with our winemaker Stephen Burch and the DC Marketing Team when they surprised us with some delightful news.  Direct Cellars had created a new proprietary wine brand named after…The Wine Guys!  It would be called “Burchfield,” a combination of our two last names.

Good thing they weren’t naming it Greenburch, or Jerrysteve, or something like that.

Of course, we were very complimented by the gesture.  Between the two of us, we are responsible in a major way for the wines DC members receive and the information that accompanies them.  We are, of course, delighted that our contributions to DC Brand Partners’ business success are being recognized in this way.

Stephen has an extensive background in the actual making of wine, which I do not.  He’s a graduate of the prestigious winemaking program at UC Davis with a degree in Viticulture and Enology, and has worked for many years in Napa, Lodi, and other important California winegrowing regions.

I come to the wine world from an entirely different direction.  As I relate in my book, “Secrets of the Wine Whisperer,” someone about 25 years ago poured me a glass of wine and I said, “Holy moley (or something to that effect), I never knew anything could taste like that.”  My wife Debi and I immediately started going to tastings, wine dinners, and other events.  So we basically educated ourselves, and I try to bring that “everyman” sensibility to my education and training efforts.  This is not an academic exercise, though so many certified sommeliers approach it that way.  We don’t.  Wine is fun and it tastes good.  It tastes even better if you know a little about it.

Stephen and I have discovered that our palates are very similar.  When we taste wine together we agree quite a bit on the flavor and aromas we experience.  Sometimes his descriptions are a bit more colorful and poetic than mine, like the time he said he tasted baked strawberry compote in one of the wines we were tasting.  But we find that our tastes and the sensations we experience are quite complementary.  A very pleasant surprise, and a situation that benefits DC members as the two of us explore and evaluate the wines we want to offer you.

There are big plans for the Burchfield label.  Currently, we’ve released two whites – a Gewürztraminer (which is a favorite of both of us) and a White Blend.  We’ll probably be adding reds in the future, as we discover sources for them in places like Washington State.  So watch for new releases.  And if you have any questions, please email me at  Both Stephen and I are dedicated to help DC members like you learn about the sensational products we offer so you can use your knowledge, appreciation, and enthusiasm to build your business.
