5 Steps to An Entrepreneur’s Success

You’ve decided to embark on the entrepreneurial journey, congrats! Feeling exhilarated and terrified at the same time is pretty normal. The most important thing to remember in building a new business is that things take time and consistency is key. While we live in a world of instant gratification, you may be juggling a lot right now and where you are today will be different in one year and much different in five. Here are 5 keys to helping you stay the course.

It’s important to have an end goal. Maybe it’s a vision or dream of what you are trying to achieve or where you want to be in the future. If you have no idea what you want or where you’re going, how can you move forward? If you have faith, and know what you really want, the rest is easy. Ok, well maybe not easy… hard work is must, but from here anything is possible. It’s just a matter of creating the right plan and sticking to it.

As I look back on my life, I can see how each step created the path that has led me to where I am today. In life, it’s one step at a time… I’ll never forget what my thesis advisor counseled me as I was going through my MBA program. One day, when I felt terribly overwhelmed, he asked me, “How do you eat an elephant?” I had no idea and never considered this. He responded, “one bite at a time”. Obviously, he wasn’t being literal. It was a metaphor and this metaphor was true for any big goal I had every set for myself, a little each day, one step at a time. Yes. It made sense.

With any big goal or plan, breaking things down into smaller action steps is key. You can almost reverse engineer things from your end goal if you’re clear on what needs to happen. Many people use the SMART goal method to define their objectives:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

One of the motivators to any big goal is being able to celebrate the wins, even if they’re small. When you take time to road map the journey towards your end result, you’ll find there are milestones of achievement. Pause and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Recognition is rare in most work places, praise is something forgotten in our busy times, but taking time to realize how far you’ve come and what you’ve accomplished will put the wind in your sails to keep you moving on!

It’s important to assign a timeline to each objective. This keeps you moving forward and holds you accountable. Start thinking about your dreams as goals with deadlines. What a concept, huh? Dreams can sound so far away, lofty, even pie in the sky… but goals sound achievable. Why not have both? My father used to say, “You can have anything in this life as long as you’re willing to work for it”.  Conversely, my mother believed that where you start isn’t where you finish. In hindsight, they’re both right. Nothing comes without sacrifice and all things take time. But here you are, and the future is bright so keep shining!
