Ngumu Chenin Blanc South Africa 2016

Ngumu Chenin Blanc South Africa 2016

Many winegrowing regions have so-called “signature” grapes and wines they produce. For example, when we think of Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon comes immediately to mind. Mention the Burgundy region of France, and it’s all about Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Chenin Blanc, also known as “Steen,” is the signature white wine of South Africa. Our Direct Cellars offering is sourced from vineyards throughout the country’s major winegrowing regions and is now bottled exclusively by us…and exclusively for our Direct Cellars members.

One of the main characteristics of this varietal is the color – almost always very light in the glass. That generally indicates light body and refreshing acidity. Another thing we expect from Chenin Blanc is aromas and flavors of white and yellow fruit, like apricot, pear, and peach. This wine is stored in oak for a very brief time, so you may detect a light touch of wood, and perhaps caramel. The oak also imparts a round mouthfeel and tones down the acidity to a very subtle level. Try this wine with any type of white fish filet, or shellfish.
