Amos Ridge Sauvignon Blanc Castilla Spain 2017

Amos Ridge Sauvignon Blanc Castilla Spain 2017

When most wine drinkers think of Sauvignon Blanc, the first thing that comes to mind is New Zealand. The second thing is probably the Loire Valley, which is the home of this particular varietal. But this type of wine is so popular that other countries are trying their hand at it…and succeeding.

And even though many of Spain’s best-known wines come from areas in the north, the central part of the country is rightfully becoming famous on its own. The climate is a bit warmer, so the wines tend to be plusher, and sometimes even a bit sweeter, than those made farther north.

But one thing that winemakers love about this varietal is that it can be made in many styles. Visit one winery, and all the wine is resting in oak barrels. Go to the winery across the street, and there’s not a stick of wood anywhere; everything is stainless steel.
Typically, characteristics of this refreshing white wine include grapefruit, pineapple, hay, maybe some lychee and gooseberry. In this example, we find subtle and sensational aromas of honey, lemon, and orange juice that carry through on the palate with rich, concentrated flavors. The texture is crisp, clean, and refreshing, with excellent acidity balancing the honey and fruit.
This is a wine that pairs incredibly well with a wide range of dishes, especially if they involve seafood. I have formulated what I call the “lemon law,” and I’ve mentioned it many times in our podcasts and videos. If you can put lemon ON it, you can drink Sauvignon Blanc WITH it. This is especially true of shellfish.
Since this is such an easy wine to like, it’s an excellent starter for your wine socials. The flavors are upfront and very pronounced, so your guests will “get it” right away.

We hope you enjoy this example of the wines that we’re sourcing especially for Direct Cellars members. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for future blogs or videos, please email me at winewhisperer@directcellars.com. I’d love to hear from you.
